Metaphor

Metaphor

Metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things. For example John is a monster. John is being compared to a monster gives him monster human characteristics.

Simile is the comparison of two unlike things using like or as. For an example Ted is tall as a tree. This is a simile Ted is being compared to a tree and the use of like and as is being used to compare Ted to a tree.

Personification is giving human qualities to animals or objects. For example love walked in the door. This is personification because love can walk though a door its a emotion feeling.

Anthropomorphism is the act of attributing human forms to an entities which are not human. For an example, Jeaus was a human he was a spirit send by god and from the bible he was able to heal the sick and rise the dead. This Anthropomorphism because from him being able to do things no other human in this world could do.

Hyperbole is exaggeration or overstatement. For an example I'm so hungry I can eat a horse. This Hyperbole for the exaggeration of me wanting to eat a whole horse.

Parable is a brief that illustrates a moral or religious lesson. For an example Thor is a parable because he is a mythical character from the vikings. From that story it feature creatures and mythical beast.

Fable is a succinct story that features animals, mythical creatures, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature. From the story chicken little , they used a baby chick to explain a story about the sky was falling.

Animism is a philosophical, religious or spiritual idea that souls or spirits exist not only in humans but also in animals, plants, rocks, natural phenomena. For an example , many religions believe that there is a god or gods and spirits that will protect , heal , and provide comfort though praying and worship. This is Animism from the use of many gods that will provide some type comfort leaving them with a spiritual idea that they exist in the world

Analogy is the comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship. For an example as hot is to cold and fire to ice. They both compare because they share the same elements.

For an example in the poem "The Forces That Though the Green Fuse Drives the Flower" by Dylan Thomas. There is an example of a metaphor in the first stanza, "How of my clay is made the hangman's lime". This is a metaphor because the term "clay" is being used to explain his body being made from clay. Also from the quote Hangman's lime, this means the his body being lead to rest becoming deaths lime. Another example of the metaphor in this is poem "My youth is bent by the same wintry fever" from the word "wintry" is giving the character a feeling of being very cold and bleak showing that his or her life is over and from the feeling of old age and death is taking over and is becoming too much to bare.

In a other poem written by Robert Herrick called "A Meditation for his Mistress" another form of a written element inside the poem was simile. For an example the line where its quotes "You are like balm enclosed", this is a simile because the use of like which is comparing he or she to a "balm enclosed". Also in most of the lines in poem have metaphors such as from thee line "You are a lovely July-flower,"this a metaphor because she was compared to a flower in full bloom in the middle of July. Therefor lastly in the very last stanza " You are the queen all flowers"this quote is personification why because the author is by given human qualities to a flower , declaring her queen of all flowers

From reading another set of poems from Emily Dickinson called The wind , The mountain , and The Stone. In the reading the poem The wind in the first stanza quotes "The wind tapped like a tired man,And like a host, "Come in,"I boldly answered; entered then My residence within" this a metaphor because the man is tried and he's trapped within himself and from the words "Host" he thinks that if he's the host of feelings he wants someone to come into his life boldly to relief him from the stress of life. Also from the poem it quotes "His speech was like the push Of numerous humming-birds at once" this is comparing her or she to push of numerous humming-birds and the use of like makes the this quote here a simile. In the poem The Mountain also written by Emily Dickinson from the quote "The mountain sat upon the plain In his eternal chair" this is a metaphor because the mountain is being compare to a chair standing in its eternal position. Also the last stanza "The seasons prayed around his knees, this is also a metaphor because the seasons are praying around a human knee and which gives them human characteristics. In the poem "The Stone" also written by Emily Dickinson from the quote How happy is the little stone That rambles in the road alone,And doesn't care about careers,And exigencies never fears; this is a metaphor because its comparing a rock to the feeling of not having fear showing human character between a human and a rock.

In the poem of E E Cummings "loneliness(a leaf falls)' this a metaphor because when a leaf falls off a tree its by itself and this is comparing its to loneliness therefore make this a metaphor.
